Here is some more information these types of general dental treatments.
dental fillings
Fillings, also known as dental restoration, are used to restore teeth and treat dental decay especially in the molars (back teeth). Wear and tear is inevitable in back teeth as these teeth do most of the heavy chewing of food, however regular cleaning, check-ups and a healthy diet can help with the prevention of problems and decay.
Two types of fillings are used today; dental amalgam (metal alloy) or a tooth-coloured material. Other forms of fillings include gold or ceramic crowns, however these are a more expensive alternative.
Receiving one or multiple fillings is a simple and quick procedure that can be done in a single dental appointment.
gum disease treatment
Gum disease (as known as periodontal disease) is the inflammation and infection of the gum and the supporting structures of the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in our population, and is caused by bacteria in the form of plaque.
Smoking is one of the major risk factors of gum disease, but it can also be complicated by other conditions such as diabetes, stress, oral hygiene and various medications.
As gum diseases can reoccur, maintenance therapy that follows treatment is the most important step in preventing the return of the gum disease. Your dentist will work with you to prevent, monitor and control the gum disease.
root canal therapy
Root canal therapy (commonly known as nerve or endodontic treatment) is the removal of a tooth's damaged or infected pulp or nerve. Inflammation or infection of the pulp can be due to several reasons, such as:
Deep caries
Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
Crack or chip in the tooth
Large restoration placed on the tooth
Trauma/injury to the tooth
Untreated pulp inflammation or infection can lead to pain or abscess. Signs and symptoms are usually pain, increased sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when touched or biting, discolouring of the tooth, swelling around the tooth and sometimes the drainage of pus. In certain cases, there could be no signs or symptoms at all.
Root canal treatment consists of several steps of care so we generally recommend 2 to 3 appointments to complete a root canal.
dentures
Dentures (or false teeth) are the most common and economic method to replace missing or damaged teeth that cannot be repaired. At Henry Dental, we can advise you on selecting the best options, and how to care for them.
Removable dentures include plastic (acrylic) dentures and metal frame (Cobalt chrome) dentures, both of which should be comfortable and painless.
crowns and bridges
Crown and bridge dentistry is used to repair or replace defective or missing teeth. This may be due to trauma, decay, and post- root canal treatment, or for aesthetic purposes.
Crowns are caps that are permanently bonded to a damaged tooth. In many of these cases, and especially after root canal treatment, a crown is often the best way to save a tooth and strengthen it. The crown fits over the core of the tooth and replaces the natural crown, the part of the tooth that can be seen above the gums.
Bridges are a way of replacing one or more missing teeth, without the use of a denture or dental implant. The procedure is very similar to the crown preparation but involves more teeth. In basic terms, it is a false tooth being held in place by a tooth next door.
tooth extraction
Removal of teeth or "dental extraction" is a part of dentistry that can often be a source of anxiety to many patients. As an oral health practice we aim to preserve natural teeth, however damaged or badly decayed teeth may need to be removed (extracted).
We are dedicated to perform extractions in a comfortable and conservative way, and provide exceptional care to you prior to and after your surgery. A tooth may be removed using local anaesthetic however general anaesthesia can be arranged on request, or if the procedure is more difficult.
removal of impacted wisdom teeth
The most common oral surgical procedure is the removal of wisdom teeth. Around our late teens or early twenties, our wisdom teeth (also known as rear or third molars) begin to erupt. These teeth can sometimes cause overcrowding in the mouth, or can become impacted in the gum when there is not enough space in the jaw to accommodate them. In most cases, it is recommended that wisdom teeth be removed if they cause any problems.
Common problems caused by wisdom teeth
Overcrowding of teeth
Damage to adjacent teeth
Cysts
Decay & gum infections
Ulcers on the cheek
Chewing problems
Movement of other teeth
Interference with your bite
We thank our collegues with their help in providing you with the latest information for your comfort and advice.
